Known as the Flavian Amphitheatre, the Colosseum was built more than 2000 years ago, and is the most famous amphitheatre in the world. It took around ten years to build, and was in active use for approximately four and a half centuries.

The Colosseum is oval-shaped with a circumference of 1719 metres and 159 metres high, and could host up to 80,000 spectators. Its history and size make this monument an icon of the ancient Roman Empire.
