Piazza Navona

Piazza Navona is one of Rome's most famous monumental squares, with its three distinctive fountains: in front of the church is Bernini's "Fontana dei Fiumi", while at the sides are the "Fontana del Nettuno o dei Calderoni" and the "Fontana del Moro", both by Giacomo della Porta.

Piazza Navona was built on the ruins of Domitian's stadium, and was used for athletics, water games and various types of competition. Today, the square hosts street artists, painters and portrait painters every day, and is transformed into a lively market over the Christmas period, selling everything from sweets to nativity scene figures.

As well as the three fountains, don't miss the church of Sant'Agnese in Agone.
